Getting Started with a Job Search
There is a lot of preliminary work to be done before you even start. Taking the time to establish your professional brand on and offline is the first step in entering the job market. Beyond creating a resume, job seekers should prepare a portfolio and fine tune their Linkedin profile.
Where to look
There are a vast amount of resources to assist in your search. Whether it is research about a company, salary range or industry, sites like Glassdoor and Fairygodboss are a good place to start. Once you have identified what you want and what you are worth it is time to start applying. Get creative in how and where you apply to receive the best results. Don’t be afraid to take a risk to stand out!
Career Transitions
Looking to try something new? Wherever possible, test out the new opportunity. In some cases this might involve a job shadow or informational interview. In others, it may mean hitting the books and learning a new skill.
Moving into tech
There has never been a better time to make the transition into tech. Did you know that many non profits and tech programs offer free classes and scholarships to learn technical skills around programming and data analytics? There is a huge demand for women and especially women of color in this industry. It is one where many professional are widely self taught, so it is easy to break into once those skills are acquired.
Negotiating - It’s Expected
Women are taught to be grateful - and not to ask for more. We need to completely abandon this mindset when it comes to work. You should negotiate all throughout your career, not just when you are offered a job. This includes stock offers, your yearly promotion percentage, your job title verbiage, everything! Always assume that anything presented to you is a starting point.
Getting Promoted
For women, getting promoted usually involves several moving parts. Most importantly, do the work. Be extraordinary in your role and beyond to make a good argument for promotion. However, you should not stop there.
CREATE A FAN CLUB
Let your colleagues know you and what you want. This includes finding sponsors who will vouch for you along the way.
